China's flat panel display industry will enter a new round of accelerated development

Since the end of last year, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hefei, Kunshan, Nanjing and other places have successively invested in the establishment of high-generation LCD panel production lines. Industry authorities have expressed concerns about the overcapacity of LCD panels in China in the next few years. Because the structure of liquid crystal display technology is quite complex, it involves upstream related materials and devices. If domestic companies make more efforts in the details of the industry chain, this will be beneficial to the healthy development of the flat panel display industry in China.

Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the "Notice on Continuing to Organize the Implementation of the Strategic Industrialization of Color TV Industry in 2010" (hereinafter referred to as the "Notice"). The "Notice" clearly stated that enterprises are encouraged to upgrade their independent innovation capabilities according to the needs of the panel and module manufacturers, achieve the scale production of key supporting materials, and conduct research and development of the new generation display technology AM-OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). Industrialization has put forward new requirements. This indicates that China's flat panel display industry will enter a new round of accelerated development.

The countries listed in the strategic emerging industries will include the flat panel display industry in the strategic emerging industries and will give priority support. According to the "2010-2012 flat panel display industry development plan" requirements, the main principles of China's flat panel display industry development is to reasonably control the scale, guide the industrial layout, co-ordinate internal and external development, strengthen independent innovation, promote industrial support, and improve industrial policies.

In fact, in 2005 the world's flat panel display industry has entered a period of rapid development, but at that time China did not grasp the opportunities in this industry. Sun Zhengmin, secretary-general of the Shenzhen Flat Display Industry Association, believes that “there are two main reasons. On the one hand, BOE, SVA, and Dragon Optical suffer losses in their performance, which has caused people to worry about the development of the flat panel display industry; on the other hand, It was at that time that CRT TVs could still be used and there was a certain market size."

However, domestic companies later recognized the importance of vigorously developing the flat-panel display industry and actively entered the field of high-generation LCD panel production lines. According to Bai Weimin, Secretary-General of the China Electronics Video Industry Association, “BOE, TCL, and Longteng Optoelectronics, etc., the first companies involved in the field of high-end LCD panels to a certain extent, driven the flat panel display companies in South Korea, Japan and China’s Taiwan to accelerate in China. Built-up LCD panel factory."

However, investment in the establishment of high-generation LCD panel production line has become a trend for a while, there has been a blind start, the next few years may cause the Chinese mainland LCD panel overcapacity situation. Jin Guopan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a fellow member of the International Optical Engineering Society, believes that due to the obvious effect of high-level LCD panel projects on the development of related industries, investment in factories around the country is a market activity, and lack of unified planning may cause excess capacity. .

Recently, the “Notice” issued by the National Development and Reform Commission clearly stipulated the principles for the development of liquid crystal display industry, focusing on color filters, polarizers, liquid crystal materials, driver ICs, wet chemicals, targets, and backlights (including brightness enhancing films). Reflective films, etc. determine the development direction of the liquid crystal display industry from the height of the industrial chain. Fortunately, at present, China has issued a scale in the development of liquid crystal display supporting industries, such as liquid crystal materials, glass, polarizers, color filters, backlight modules.

The development of the flat panel display industry can not be limited to the existing liquid crystal display technology, OLED (organic light emitting diode) display technology, laser display technology, and 3D technology related to the display industry, energy saving and environmental protection technology, etc., China should be early layout. OLEDs are seen as the future of the flat panel display industry. It is to see the potential of the OLED industry, many places in China have begun to get involved in the research of OLED technology, and try to industrialize.

According to statistics, at present, China is engaged in OLED research and development throughout the country, and Jilin, Beijing, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangdong, and Sichuan have OLED research and development or production bases. There are more concentrated areas in Sichuan, Jiangsu, and Guangdong.

The "Notice" also pointed out: "Encourage qualified companies to focus on breakthroughs in key new technologies for display technologies such as AMOLED, and gradually develop industrialization capabilities. These include AMOLED's substrate technology, vacuum coating technology, and thin film packaging technology."

However, experts in the development of OLED technology still have little disagreement, and all believe that: "To develop the OLED industry, we must first develop the TFT-LCD (thin film field effect transistor liquid crystal)." From an expert's point of view, the current development of the flat panel display industry Should be placed in the TFT-LCD industry.

Sun Zhengmin said, “At present, the state supports the development of liquid crystal, plasma and OLED, of which 80% of the power should be placed in the TFT-LCD industry. From the current technology trends, whether it is electronic paper or OLED, it needs TFT technology. Platforms such as AMOLED's drive technology are TFTs, and the development of AMOLEDs must first develop TFT technology."

Jin Guolu believes that the current OLED technology must first solve the problem of not being able to make big, but the view that OLED will be the direction of future display technology has not changed.

Zhang Baizhe, an expert in liquid crystal technology at Tsinghua University, said that the so-called industrial substitution is a subversive alternative, such as TFT-LCD instead of CRT; the other is based on the replacement of the original technology, such as OLED can not do without TFT technology. OLED technology reserves are related companies in the LCD industry.

Zhang Bing, chief representative of DisplaySearch China, said that in recent years LCD production capacity will be further expanded; PDP (plasma) will not increase production capacity by 2012; OLED is currently the world only Sony, LG, Samsung are doing. From the market trend, the development of TFT-LCD is the current focus.

Coordinating the overall development of the layout In the era of CRT, China has organized and implemented the "Television Specialization in Localization of Color TVs", taking the whole machine and key components as the leader, led the development of related raw materials and equipment, constructed a complete industrial chain, and established China's independent color tube. The color TV industrial system has laid a solid industrial foundation for the glory of domestic color TV sets since the 1990s.

In fact, the key to the next step in China's flat panel display industry lies in how to coordinate the layout. Sun Zhengmin stated that at present, China needs leading enterprises. For example, the State is encouraging the panel companies to establish a test platform for the application of flat panel display materials certification, and to interact with the material companies to test and verify the materials in a real environment and speed up the localization of the flat panel display materials. In foreign countries, these platforms are companies such as Samsung and LGD. However, in China, none have done a better job.

On the OLED side, Tian Chaoyong, Sichuan Hongvision’s product technology minister, said: “At present, the main problem in the OLED industry in China is that each unit engaged in OLED related industries should be more open-minded. At present, China’s OLED industry is spread all over the country, but The nation’s resources have not been effectively integrated."

As of December 2009, there are five OLED production line projects that have been built, under construction, and planned in Guangdong, namely the Shanwei Truly small size OLED production line, Foshan Zhongxian Technology's low-temperature polysilicon AMOLED production line project, and Dongguan Hongwei's OLED display demonstration. Production line project, AM (active) OLED photoelectric project of Huizhou Maoqin Optoelectronics Company and OLED production line project of Rainbow in Foshan. In Sichuan, Hongvision is by far the only company in China that has developed AMOLED products and has more than 110 OLED patents. "How to prevent 'one move up' and rationally lay out the flat panel display industry is a problem that needs to be solved at present." Sun Zhengmin said. (Wen / Hu Chunmin)
