"Walking shoes for power generation" solves the problem of mobile phone charging

"Charging shoes"

Researchers in the United States have made full use of human kinetic energy to develop a device that can be put into a shoe and walk around while generating electricity. This can be used to charge mobile phones, MP3s, and other devices. Professor Tom Krupkin and Ashley Taylor, professors of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, published a report on the 23rd issue of Nature Communications, which disclosed the details of the device.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) quoted Kruepkin as saying: "Overall, people are machines that can generate great energy, such as when one runs fast, one person can produce 1 kilowatt of power."

He explained that some previous researchers tried to convert the kinetic energy of walking into electricity, but the efficiency was too low to be of practical value. He and his colleagues invented a new energy harvesting technology, reverse electrowetting, that can solve this problem. Electrowetting is the use of voltages to change the appearance of droplets on hydrophobic surfaces. Researchers in turn use this principle to convert the energy of micro-droplet flow into electrical energy.

The device is similar to a layer of insole containing thousands of droplets of tiny droplets and placed inside the shoes. As the electricity is generated, the power can reach 10 watts. According to the researchers, it is enough to charge an ordinary mobile phone or laptop.

Energy Saving and Environmental Protection Weapons

How to transfer electrical energy from shoes to mobile phone? It was suggested that the shoe be connected to a USB cable. This is obviously not the most practical choice.

The University of Wisconsin research team recommends that the shoe be equipped with a wireless transmitter and connected to a power generator to charge the phone.

Krupkekin and Taylor recently established a company and hopes to join hands with shoe-making companies to commercialize this technology as soon as possible.

Patrick Joseph Franks, the National Physical Laboratory of the United Kingdom, studied how to use wasted energy. He said that the University of Wisconsin research "has taken a step in the right direction."

Franks said that people want to be able to charge mobile phones and other electronic devices anytime and anywhere, and walking electricity may be the most obvious way to achieve this, “but I don’t know if it is better than carrying efficient solar cells”.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin believe that walking power plants are widely used and the market prospects are promising.

If the soldiers’ shoes are equipped with this device, soldiers can use fewer batteries to reduce their weight. At this stage, some American soldiers are carrying about 9 kilograms of equipment while marching in order to recharge electronic devices such as night-vision goggles, laptops, and GPS devices.

In addition, walking to a mobile phone to generate electricity this way may encourage more people to walk around and be healthier.
