(1) Introduction
The nitrocellulose plastic is a plastic made of cotton linters or other natural cellulose such as grass and wood which is nitrated into nitrocellulose and then added with 20-30% plasticizer camphor. Its commercial name is Celluloid, and its English abbreviation is CN.
(2) Identification features
The natural color is translucent, and it has a camphor taste when rubbed; it is easy to soften and deform in boiling water, decomposes when the temperature is l00°C, and burns at 170°C; when it is exposed to fire, it burns violently and belongs to flammable plastic; the burning flame is yellow. There is a camphor taste released, and there is less residue after burning.
(three) performance
1. The dyeing is bright, and the pigment can be added to make an opaque product.
2. The softening temperature is low. When heated at 80 °C, it can be processed arbitrarily, and the molding size is relatively stable.
3. It is stable to oil and soluble in many organic solvents, but it is not affected in 5% ethanol, carbon tetrachloride and gasoline.
4. In the dilute acid and dilute alkali solution, the surface color can be changed, and it is easy to be decomposed in a concentrated acid or alkali solution.
5. Under the long-term effect of light and heat, camphor will gradually sublimate, which will restore the inherent hard and brittle nature of nitrocellulose, making the product easy to break.
(4) Use
Celluloid is mainly used for making cultural and educational supplies, such as triangle ruler, pen holder, musical instrument case, etc. It can also make eyeglass frames, umbrella handles, etc.; it is also often used as toys, combs, soap boxes, etc. Because of its light weight and good elasticity, it is a good raw material for table tennis.
