China's Chemical Industry Operation in January-February 2012

In January-February, the added value of the chemical industry increased by 13.7% year-on-year, representing an increase of 1.7 percentage points year-on-year.

Among the main products, the output of primary forms of plastics was 8.04 million tons, an increase of 6% year-on-year, a year-on-year slowdown of 9.3 percentage points; the output of synthetic rubber was 579,000 tons, an increase of 4.7%, a slowdown of 13.8%; synthetic fiber production was 5.14 million tons, an increase 13.5%, slowed by 6.5 percentage points.

The output of ethylene was 2.64 million tons, an increase of 0.6% year-on-year, and the growth rate slowed by 35.2% year-on-year. The output of caustic soda was 3.92 million tons, an increase of 5.1%, slowing 12.8 percentage points. The output of soda ash was 3.77 million tons, an increase of 10.4%, and an acceleration of 9.5 percentage points. Fertilizer production was 10.93 million tons, an increase of 19.9%, accelerating 13.9 percentage points; among them, nitrogen fertilizer increased by 18.9%, phosphorus fertilizer increased by 28.9%, and potash fertilizer decreased by 16.7%. The output of pesticides was 550,000 tons, an increase of 30.9%, accelerating 11.6 percentage points. The output of tires made of rubber tires was 121.75 million, an increase of 8.4%, an acceleration of 4 percentage points. The output of calcium carbide was 3.05 million tons, an increase of 14.9%, accelerating 8.4 percentage points.

Among the chemical products monitored in focus, the prices of soda ash, yellow phosphorus, and potassium chloride fell back from last December, and prices of other products rose slightly. In February, the average price of caustic soda (caproline) was 3,180 yuan/ton, which was 0.3% higher than last year, up 22.8% year-on-year, and soda 1,740 yuan/ton, down 5.9% from last December, down 17.1% year-on-year.
