Sunflower-type CSP system achieves 34% efficiency

Ripsasso Energy of Sweden built a disc-shaped Stirling solar thermal power system in the desert of Namibia in South Africa like a sunflower. It can convert 34% of the solar energy into electricity and directly input the electricity to the power grid without any cuts. This photovoltaic power generation system has more than double the photoelectric conversion efficiency of traditional solar power systems and was rated by the British “Guardian” as the most efficient solar energy system in the world.

The project was independently tested by British company IT Power, and its test sites were in the Northern Cape Province. It shows a solar energy conversion rate of 34%, and the power can be directly input to the grid without any loss. The standard solar panels can only achieve a solar conversion rate of 23%, and there will be a 15% reduction in electricity when transferring electrical energy to the grid. According to the test report, a single dish can generate 75 to 85 MWh per year, enough to power 24 standard British homes. If the same amount of electricity is generated from burning coal, about 81 tons of carbon dioxide will be released into the atmosphere.

According to the physicist's organization network on May 17th, the system uses a large number of huge dishes in design, they can follow the direction of the movement of the sun, and constantly adjust themselves to capture the most heat energy. According to reports, these dishes are combined with a Stirling engine parabolic mirror. The dish looks like a typical satellite dish. It concentrates the sun's rays on a "hot spot" to drive the Stirling engine. The power generation system generates electricity without using water and is the first commercially available dish-type Stirling solar thermal power generation system.

The Stirling machine technology originated from the Swedish company Kokum, which is used by the Swedish Navy as a submarine engine. The Stirling engine is a closed cycle regenerative heat engine that uses a closed gas to drive the piston and flywheel. It is powered by a hotspot-driven engine, is more efficient and less noisy than a steam engine, and can use almost any heat source. (Reporter Hualing)
