Superconducting Energy Storage-Limiting Current System Development and Grid Operation Course for New Energy Generation

On March 1st, experts from the High Technology Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology organized an official acceptance of the topic of “Development and Operation of Superconducting Energy Storage and Current Limiting Systems for New Energy Generation” in the “12th Five-Year Plan” 863 Plan advanced energy technology field. This topic was undertaken by China Xidian Electric Co., Ltd. and Zhang Guomin, a researcher of the Superconducting Power and New Transmission Technology Department of the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was responsible for the project. Acceptance experts agreed that the project completed the research content specified in the project mission statement, reached and exceeded the technical assessment indicators, and agreed to pass the formal acceptance.

The 1MVA/1MJ superconducting energy storage-current limiting system prototype developed by the project has both energy storage and current limiting capabilities. From 11:49 on January 6, 2017, the 10kV power grid system in Yumeng Low Wopu Wind Farm was connected to the grid for operation. The harmonic distortion of the grid was 2%, and the power response time was 0.8ms, effectively improving power quality and Low-voltage ride-through capability, comprehensive technical performance has reached the international advanced level.

The grid-connected operation of the prototype effectively solves the problems of unstable power output and high-to-low voltage ride-through requirements for renewable energy grid-connected power generation, improves grid-connected utilization of new energy generation, and creates superconducting multi-functional power. The first application of the device in the new energy farm.
