Formaldehyde is a typical indoor air pollutant. At present, the adsorption / absorption formaldehyde purification technology used by people is prone to secondary pollution, and it is difficult to meet the national air quality standards in practical applications. In particular, the process of oxidative conversion of formaldehyde to formic acid is a formaldehyde oxidation reaction, which requires a higher temperature to achieve. Researchers of the Institute of Earth Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have developed a series of room temperature catalytic materials for the degradation and purification of indoor low-concentration formaldehyde by means of phase interface construction and crystal plane control, etc., in view of the limitations of temperature when traditional transition metal oxides achieve complete catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde . Related researches have been published in the journals of Applied Catalytic B Environment, Journal of Chemical Engineering and Environmental Science and Technology.
According to the team's experts, they successfully prepared zirconia heterogeneous junction (TMZ), effectively promoting the activation of molecular oxygen at the interface, and using the combination of computational and in-situ infrared spectroscopy techniques to propose the presence of formaldehyde at the TMZ heterojunction interface New mechanism of room temperature catalysis. This work enriches the catalytic reaction path of formaldehyde at room temperature, and provides theoretical support for the design of catalytic materials for efficient removal of formaldehyde at room temperature. Furthermore, the team worked with Li Shuncheng, a professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, to control the three main dominant crystal plane families, which systematically revealed their effects on the formation and quantitative effects of oxygen vacancies, catalytically active regions and acidic active sites.
