US scientists develop solar cells with conversion efficiencies close to 50%

On April 14, according to foreign media reports, a new study published by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in "Natural Energy" showed that scientists have created a solar cell with an efficiency close to 50%.

To build this device, NREL researchers rely on Group II-V compound materials with broad light absorption properties. Each of the six connection points (photosensitive layers) of the battery is specifically designed to capture light in a specific part of the solar spectrum.

The device contains 140 layers of III-V materials to improve the performance of these connection points. Due to the high efficiency and manufacturing cost of III-V solar cells, it is most commonly used to power satellites, which makes the performance of III-V materials unmatched.

The researchers said that the six-junction solar cell currently holds the world record for the highest conversion efficiency of 47.1%, which was measured under concentrated lighting. Even under sunlight, the conversion efficiency is as high as 39.2%, which is currently the highest record.

NREL scientist Ryan France said: "Six-junction solar cells demonstrate the extraordinary potential of multi-junction solar cells. On the earth, it is very suitable for concentrator photovoltaic power generation. You can use a mirror to capture light and focus the light to a certain point. Use less material to achieve higher efficiency. "

The researchers pointed out that the current research team is studying the resistance barrier to reduce the current flow inside the battery in order to make the conversion efficiency reach more than 50%.
