Terahertz light is an electromagnetic wave between the EHF wave and the infrared ray. It is expected to be applied to non-destructive inspection of dangerous goods and high-capacity wireless communication. However, since it is not a cheap, small light source, it is put to a later stage. The research team used graphene formed by a network of carbon atoms, showing the possibility of a terahertz source becoming laser light.
A layer of silicon carbide is formed on the silicon substrate using an organic gas. Then, heat treatment is performed to grow a film of graphene. It has been found that this layer of film emits terahertz light from graphene in a very short period of time by illuminating the illuminating infrared laser.
In the future, the team will work to develop a device that encloses the light particles inside and increases the intensity of the light source. It is expected that the research results will be closer to the terahertz laser that can be used at room temperature.
