Russia set out to develop a new type of helicopter carrier to replace the French "Northwest Wind"

Russian officials said on the 19th that the Russian Krylov National Research Center has begun to develop a new helicopter carrier. The ship will be larger than the "Northwest Wind" class amphibious assault ship sold in France.

Since the French side used the Ukrainian crisis as an excuse to postpone the implementation of the arms sales contract, Russia has so far not received two "Northwest Wind" class amphibious assault ships promised by the French side.

Self-sufficiency

The Russian "satellite" news agency quoted Krylov National Research Center officials as saying that the new helicopter carrier developed by the Russian side is called "Ravina" and is expected to be delivered to the Russian Navy from 2026 to 2027.

The official said at the military expo on the outskirts of Moscow that the "Ravina" displacement was 24,000 tons, far exceeding the full displacement of the "Northwest Wind" class warships of 21,000 tons.

The "Ravina" can sail 8,000 kilometers at a speed of 18 nautical miles (1 nautical mile and 1.852 kilometers), with a maximum speed of 22 nautical miles per hour.

In addition, the "Ravina" can carry 320 crew members, 500 soldiers and 50 armored vehicles.

Russia originally intended to import "Northwest Wind" class amphibious assault ships from France. The warship is a fourth-generation amphibious warship developed by France. It is 199 meters long and 32 meters wide. It has a full displacement of 21,000 tons. It has long-range force delivery and amphibious operational command capability. It can be equipped with heavy equipment such as helicopters, amphibious armored vehicles and tanks. 900 soldiers.

French power

In 2011, Russia signed a military purchase contract with France for the “Northwest Wind” amphibious assault ship, with a total amount of 1.2 billion euros. According to the contract, France is scheduled to deliver an amphibious assault ship to the Russian Navy in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Due to the delay in the delivery of the French side, Boqikalev, vice chairman of the Russian Federal Government Military Commission, said at the end of last month that Russia finally decided not to purchase the "Northwest Wind" class amphibious assault ship from France.

Bochkalev said that the "Northwest Wind" class amphibious assault ship type of warships has been included in Russia's defense plan, and Russia will build such warships according to its own standards.

Lukiyanov, deputy secretary of the Russian Security Conference, said that Russia’s purchase of “Northwest Wind”-class amphibious assault ships from France would not cause any damage to Russian defense capabilities. The amount of the Russian claim to France will depend on the outcome of the negotiations between the two parties.

Russian "satellite" news agency reported that Russia's military technology cooperation department head Alexei Tikki said on the 18th that France provided Russia with some "Northwest Wind" class warship construction technology.
