Seokheun Choi said that this type of microfluidic chip lab system, which can generate its own energy, is particularly critical for stand-alone, independent, self-sustaining point-of-care medical diagnostic devices that operate in resource-constrained and remote locations. For those applications, miniaturized bio-cells (micro-BSCs) will be the most suitable power source because this technology is similar to Earth's natural ecosystem.

“The miniaturized bio-based solar cells provide self-sustainable renewable clean energy through photosynthesis and respiration of the micro-organism's diurnal cycle. However, this technology has not yet been translated into practical applications because of its relatively low power and relatively short life cycle. short."
Choi and Ph.D. student Lin Liu designed a miniature, microfluidic, bio-based solar cell with high electrical power and long-term operational capability that will provide a practical and sustainable power supply for lab-on-a-chip applications.
