Xinhua News Agency, Tokyo, May 3 (Reporter Qian Jing) Researchers at the Hiroshima University in Japan are developing chickens that can produce hypoallergenic eggs by genetically modifying chicken embryonic stem cells. This chicken's fertilized egg will help produce a safer flu vaccine.
According to the report of Japan’s “Yomiuri Shimbun†on the 2nd, influenza vaccines usually rely on the fertilized eggs of chickens. Since trace egg components will remain in the vaccine, people who have severe allergic reactions to eggs cannot be vaccinated normally.
The report pointed out that the egg component that remains in the vaccine is an egg-type mucin with a strong allergenicity. In April this year, Hiroshima University’s Horikita and other researchers developed a transgenic technology that prevented the expression of ovomucoid genes, and transplanted genetically engineered embryonic stem cells back into chicken fertilized eggs to produce a new type of female chick. It will produce eggs without egg mucin. According to reports, this GM chicken is expected to be born at the end of this year.
Hypoallergenic eggs can be used to produce a variety of vaccines including new influenza vaccines, giving hope to those who are unable to be vaccinated because they are allergic to eggs.
