It is reported that there were more than 100,000 lightning strikes in the area in July, and lightning strikes caused a total of 3 deaths and 1 injury. Lightning protection experts reminded that during the summer season, due to heat convection and other conditions, thunderstorms will occur, and citizens must still pay attention to lightning protection.

Lightning strike disaster caused 3 deaths and 1 injury in July

The lightning protection center of the autonomous region said that the lightning strike on July 31 was mainly affected by local strong convective weather. According to the monitoring of the Lightning Monitoring and Positioning Network of Guangxi, 249 lightnings occurred in Gongcheng from 0:00 to 24:00 that day. After surveying the accident site by the lightning protection experts of the local meteorological department, it is believed that the lightning strike site is surrounded by paddy fields and fruit trees, and people are located relatively high in the paddy fields. Once a thunderstorm occurs, people can easily become a lightning strike point. In fact, since July, there have been frequent thunderstorm activities in our area, and the lightning strike disaster has caused 3 deaths and 1 injury.

Lightning strikes every day in July

According to the statistics of the lightning protection department, from July 1 to 31, Guangxi meteorological stations issued lightning warning signals a total of 79 times, including 15 yellow warnings for lightning and 64 orange warnings for lightning. According to the statistics of monitoring data of the Guangxi Lightning Positioning System, lightning occurred every day in July, and there were 109,924 flashovers of cloud-to-ground discharge, which was a decrease from June.

Among them, the thunderstorm process mainly occurs on the 14th to 18th and the 22nd to 23rd, with the highest frequency of thunderstorms occurring from 0:00 to 2 o'clock and 14:00 to 23:00 during the day. The ground flash activity-intensive areas are mainly concentrated in Baise, Hechi, Liuzhou, Nanning, Yulin, Guilin, Hezhou, Wuzhou, Guigang, Laibin and other places. A total of 12 lightning disaster reports were received in the region in July, including 3 accidents involving lightning strikes. The lightning on July 22 caused 1 death and one injury in Licheng Town, Lipu County. The lightning strike on July 23 killed 1 person in Shatian Town, Babu District, Hezhou City. The lightning on July 31 caused Xiling Township in Gongcheng County One person died, and the dead and injured were farmers.

According to reports, thunderstorms at this stage are mainly caused by two phenomena. One is caused by heat on the surface and the temperature difference at low altitude becomes larger, which causes thermal convection. The other is because the convective cloud is unstable, causing water vapor movement to form convection, which causes lightning. August will still be a time when lightning strikes frequently in our area, and the public must still pay attention to the safety of lightning protection.
