Scientists Develop Nanogels that Accelerate Healing of Skin Burns

Second and third degree burns take a very long time due to the depth to the lower layers of the skin. Longer treatment will not only increase the patient's pain, but also increase the risk of infection and scarring. Although there are many drugs that can suppress pain and infection, there are no treatment methods that can effectively accelerate the healing of scalds. However, researchers have developed a new type of nanogel treatment.

This treatment was developed by A*STAR's Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN). This nanogel is based on the Institute's own patented self-assembling ultrashort peptide technology. Short sequences of amino acids are automatically combined into nanofibers, which form a fiber gel after addition of water.

The resulting gel is breathable and has extremely rich moisture. It can serve as a scaffold for the growth of skin cells and promote skin regeneration and repair. This ultra-short peptide is non-toxic and non-immunogenic, making it ideal for biomedical applications.

The IBN team stated that this technique is much faster than treating burns with silicone-based wound dressings. Traumatic wounds require 2-10 weeks recovery time for conventional treatment. The team's animal experiments showed that 100% of wounds healed in only 2 weeks. Traditionally, the traditional silica gel dressing can only cure 63% of the injured area. Dr. Charlotte Hauser, chief research scientist and project manager at IBN, said: “We look forward to developing a gel that contains biological activity to accelerate skin regeneration. This technology can also be used to develop artificial skin and treat deeper burns.”
