Quality is worrying, the power tool industry needs to cultivate leading enterprises

59 companies, 60 products, 24 products are not up to standard. In the national supervision and spot check of the third batch of product quality announced by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine in the near future, the quality problems of electric tools (electric drill, electric hammer, angle grinder) are still concentrated in small and medium-sized production enterprises.

"From the results of this national supervision and spot check, the quality of key and key enterprises is no problem. The unqualified products are mainly concentrated in small and medium-sized enterprises, and some even small workshop enterprises. In general, the domestic market power tools The quality of the products has been improving for many years," said Zhang Chuanfu, secretary general of the Power Tools Branch of China Electrical Equipment Industry Association.

The industry believes that as an important global power tool manufacturing base, the development of China's power tool industry has always been export-oriented. Driven by exports, the quality of domestic power tools has also been improving, but the lack of well-known brands has made China's power tool industry mainly in the OEM (OEM) state, while further improving the quality, creating China. The world-class leader in the power tool industry has become a top priority for the development of the entire industry.

Raw materials pass the most stringent certification
According to the statistics of the Power Tools Branch of China Electrical Equipment Industry Association, 85% of China's power tool products are currently exported, and the domestic market only accounts for 10% to 15%. In the domestic market, domestic companies are in an absolute leading position in terms of market share, and more than 90% of the market is occupied by domestic products.

"In the export products, our products are mainly tested and certified according to the standards of the exporting countries. Now our products have passed the most stringent product certification in the world, including German GS certification, US UL certification, etc. Our products can be achieved, and the quality of the entire export product has been improving." Zhang Chuanfu said.

Raw materials have always been an important factor affecting the quality of power tools in China. Five years ago, a company in Suzhou received a complaint from a German customer saying that its S1M-125 angle grinder contained PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and exceeded the standard, requiring a return. The batch of products involved a total of 134,000 units, 1.13 million US dollars. Subsequently, more than a dozen companies involved in the production of electric hammer, jigsaw, sanding machine, drilling, electric wood milling and other varieties have been suspended for sale, unsold and suspended shipments, some products were stranded in the port. PAHs are hydrocarbons containing two or more benzene rings in the molecule, including more than 150 kinds of compounds such as naphthalene, phenanthrene and anthracene. “If waste is used as a raw material, PAHs will be produced due to repeated use, but if you use good materials, you can completely avoid this problem, although it will increase the cost, but the quality is more guaranteed.” Zhang Chuanfu said.

Now, a series of technical directives such as the Restriction of Use of Certain Hazardous Substances Directive (ROHS), the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) and the Environmental Design Requirements for Energy-Efficient Products (EUP Directive) in electrical and electronic equipment have been issued and implemented. In the European and American markets, the requirements for environmental protection and safety of power tools are also more stringent. "At present, Chinese enterprises can fully meet the requirements of foreign technical standards and environmental protection in terms of raw materials." Zhang Chuanfu said that the raw materials of China's entire power tool products will be more environmentally friendly.

Production equipment is no longer dependent on imports
On the one hand, the quality of power tools in China is improved, and on the other hand, the quality of raw materials is higher and more environmentally friendly. On the other hand, it is inseparable from the continuous improvement of the quality of power tools in China.

It is understood that in the first 10 years of reform and opening up, China's power tools production equipment is mainly imported; in the middle of 10 years, China's key equipment must also rely on imports. However, in the last 10 years, especially in the past 5 years, China's domestic power tools have made substantial breakthroughs, and the quality of domestically produced automated and semi-automated production equipment has been very good.

"Imported equipment is not only technically controlled by people, but also expensive, and it is difficult for SMEs to afford. Now, the quality of domestically produced manufacturing equipment is very good, and most domestic manufacturers are using domestic equipment. It can be said that the production equipment of electric tools in China It is no longer dependent on imports." Zhang Chuanfu said.

According to reports, at present, whether it is gears or machine tools in processing equipment, domestic equipment is not worse than imported equipment. "It should be said that by vigorously revitalizing the equipment manufacturing industry, such as the development of the machine tool industry, it directly promotes the improvement of the quality of power tool production equipment and the increase of market share." Zhang Chuanfu said.

"In addition to some very high-end and core equipment, domestic equipment can basically meet the needs of our company's daily manufacturing." Jiangsu Jinding Power Tools Group Co., Ltd. Deputy General Manager Shangguan Defa said.

Cultivating leading enterprises is a top priority
According to the statistics of the Power Tools Branch of China Electrical Equipment Industry Association, the export volume of power tools in China increased by 28% in the first half of this year, and the export value increased by 24% year-on-year. It has basically recovered to the level before the 2008 world financial crisis.

At the same time, the domestic market has also maintained a high-speed growth trend, with a year-on-year increase of 12% in the first half of this year. The China Electrical Equipment Industry Association Power Tools Branch predicts that the output of domestic power tools will reach 230 million units in 2010, an increase of about 15%. Despite this, the industry concentration of power tools in China is low. More importantly, China's power tool industry lacks world-class brands and well-known companies such as Bosch, Makita, Hitachi, Black & Decker and Xi Li. Zhang Chuanfu believes: "The key to the development of China's power tool industry is to accelerate the construction of independent brands."

Zhou Yuan, head of the quality management department of Makita (China) Co., Ltd., said in an interview that the characteristics of China's power tool industry are too much, too chaotic and too complicated. Need to use market forces for integration, so that some small businesses can be eliminated, saving social resources and avoiding vicious price wars. Although some large-scale power tool companies have emerged, OEMs are still the mainstream, which requires some companies to adjust their own positioning and create their own world-class brands.

Zhang Peisheng, senior business commissioner of China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Mechanical and Electrical Products, believes that without independent brands, products cannot have high added value, let alone lead consumption and guide the market. Creating a self-owned brand takes several generations of effort. There is a need for the entire industry to have such an idea, to have an industry culture, to compete on quality, service, awareness and new products, rather than simply fighting price wars.

"In the first 20 years, we can regard it as the era of OEM of power tools. In the future, China's power tool products should take into consideration the factors of safety and environmental protection from the raw material link. The power tool industry should be specialized and large-scale. And the efforts to establish a Chinese brand, so that China really transforms from a power tool power to a strong country." Xing Yujiu, executive vice president of China Electrical Equipment Industry Association said.
